Have you been dreaming of those sweet newborn photos and now you’re finally welcoming your beautiful baby?
In life, things don’t always go as planned so there may be something that postponed your dream session. Don’t think your chance has passed!
Covid-19 has really thrown a monkey wrench in this entire year for most people. Newborn photos is one area of impact for a lot of families.
Not only that, but things like unexpected hospital stay or even just waiting until after the baby has already arrived before reaching out to book a session. Whatever the reason is, I don’t say no. Sometimes I get requests for older newborns and sometimes parents just think it’s too late so they don’t even try.
The ideal time frame for those sleepy, curly poses is within the first 2 weeks but we don’t always get our ideal so we have to adapt.
I consider a baby “newborn” up to 8 weeks, and depending on how early they arrived, upwards towards 12 weeks.
Sometimes older babies sleep better as they’re really getting their fill and are adding weight but their flexibility is changing after that 2 week mark.
Not all babies can physically go into some poses no matter their age, but they do become increasingly difficult as the baby gets older so the posing will be less “newborn” style.
This doesn’t mean you have to forego photos altogether. It’s still a beautiful time in your life to capture and your session will adapt.
Just an example, this baby here was 12 weeks at his session due to a longer hospital stay but we still captured some beautiful images of him and the experience was wonderful.
His posing was adjusted for a few reasons – age, physical limitations and just his overall preference. This is the case with all babies, if the baby isn’t comfortable it just isn’t pushed.
A professional photographer will adjust their work as necessary for any situation. If you are turned down simply because your baby is older, take it as a blessing! There is someone who will gladly capture this time for you so don’t get discouraged!
